About This Course

Longform Form Study is a class for improvisers with at least 3 years of training who are looking to learn and practice improv formats, experience working with a regular team, and receive direct coaching.

Each weekend intensive will feature 6 hours of instruction and a 45 minute show at The Comedy Clubhouse. The formats will increase in complexity over the course of the term allowing team members time to gel and develop awareness of the skills and styles of the group.

About each Format

The Harold: The original longform. With it’s simple 3-Act structure, the Harold is a great jumping off point to explore narrative, theme, and game. The cast creates 3 distinct worlds and finds ways to connect them by the end of the show.

The Superscene: The audience gives suggestions for 4-5 scenes they wish to see and the actors present them. Then the audience votes one out and the stories continue into 2nd, 3rd, 4th beats and more.

Freeform: Acting on shared impulses and communicating theatrical direction, the players create a format that unfolds in the present. Learning a palate of shared techniques, actors will have influence on the tone, pace, and style of the performance.

The Pretty Flower: Combining sincere narrative with free inspiration, The Pretty Flower tells a main story that inspires tangential scenes which create characters to join the story. Inspiration folds on itself to create a beautiful and textured play.

What are the benefits of teamwork?
Working within a group to create collaboratively is incredibly difficult, especially considering how valuable it is to honor the different perspectives and approaches individuals contribute. In this course, you will learn how to embrace the ideas of others and gain the confidence to express yourself and share at your full potential.

What are the benefits of being on stage?
Rising to the challenge of performing on stage boosts confidence and allows you to practice the skills you learn in class. The skills you take away from improv benefit you in the theatre and in your life, but really crystalize in the moment when you must rely on your teammates and bring your best in the moment you need it. That’s when the skills are truly learned.

What are the benefits of learning comedy?
Comedy is a unique form of communication. Your goal is to elicit one response- laughter- but it’s so much more. People all have different senses of humor, and you can reach them on a mental, emotional, or guttural level. In practicing comedy, you will learn many methods to reach out and connect with someone.
